Chelsea was selected as a 2021 Social Science Scholar at Florida State University, a highly competitive leadership program that recognizes and challenges outstanding juniors in the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy.
With her scholarship, she spent her last summer of undergraduate studying with the Institute for Central American Development Studies (ICADS) to reconnect with her Latinidad and learn Spanish.
Additionally, Chelsea interned with Fundación Mujer, a non-profit that supports the women and refugee population in Costa Rica, and a UNHR partner.
Chelsea filmed and edited video packages to help tell the story of Fundación Mujer. She is grateful to Adriana Carta and Nancy Pardomo for sharing their stories with her.
Adriana and Nancy came to Costa Rica as refugees, where their traditional certifications in law and teaching rendered themselves useless. After working multiple jobs, they decided they wanted to work on something they were passionate about. Adriana and Nancy turned to Fundación Mujer, where they took business classes and graduated from the program as entrepreneurs. They now run successful gastronomical businesses out of San José, Costa Rica.
